School
Health plans, nursing at school, IEPs and 504 plans, transportation, and teaching at home or in the hospital.
School is a right
Children with medical complexity have the right to a free public education. Schools must provide the health services a child needs to attend, like a nurse for tube feeds or suctioning, through an IEPIndividualized Education Program: a written plan for a child's special education services at school. or a 504 plan.
Plans for the school day
- Individualized health plan (IHP): written with the school nurse. What care your child needs, who gives it, and when.
- Emergency plan: what to do if something goes wrong at school or on the bus. Your emergency information form helps.
- 504 plan or IEP: for accommodations, services and special education.
- Transportation: a bus with a nurse or aide, if your child needs one.
- Homebound or hospital instruction: teaching at home or in the hospital when your child cannot attend.
